Madeline stopped at Lottieâs suite first and gently knocked several times. When she did not answer, she proceeded to Hughâs room.
He came to the door so quickly; she assumed he also might have had trouble sleeping.
âMadeline, what is it? Are you all right?â
âItâs Lottie.â
He looked worried and said, âThe last time I saw you with your hair down was in hospital. I know it must be something serious for you to come after midnight.â
She explained what happened, and he said, âIâll be dressed and back here, momentarily.â
âI will pin my hair up and at least attempt to look presentable.â
They both appeared in the hall within minutes, looking bedraggled but ready to act.
âHugh, Iâd like to check with the concierge to see if Lottie left me a message, and if not, that might give us a clue on how to proceed.
âIf not, I hope a manager will enter her room to see if sheâs all right. I donât think she would be angry if we did so. She would know our only concern is her well-being.â
âWhat could motivate her to wander out alone onto the beach in the dark of night, especially when she is frightened enough to faint over the flying crows?
âIt is perplexing. Whatever prompted her to overcome her fears and go out alone?â
âYou and I are within steps of her room. She could have come to us for help, unless of courseâ¦â
She stopped, and a chilling thought came over her.
âYes, Madelineâ¦of courseâwhat?â
âUnless she was not afraid of themâthe person could be someone she trusted not to hurt her. But what if that person is also the murderer?â
Hugh said, âIf that is true, she might not think it and unwittingly put herself in danger.â
